The college campus songs from Taiwan in the 1980s once brought joy to young main landers, and dominated the pop music scene. It wasn’t until 1995 when domestic campus songs began to emerge, with Lao Lang’s works as the highlights. They include “My Deskmate,”  “The Brother Sleeps on the Upper Deck,” and other famous campus songs. Now let us have a look at those popular Chinese campus songs:

1. Ding Xiang Hua （丁香花） – by Tang Lei

At the end of 2002, Tang Lei put his song”Ding Xiang Hua” on internet. In October 2003, when Tang Lei visited Baidu search list, he suddenly saw his own song on the top 10 list. The song turned out to be a popular campus song among netizens.

2. My Deskmate (同桌的你）- by Lao Lang

In 1995, a song named “My Deskmate” swept the country and made Lao Lang an overnight star. Lao Lang, whose autonym is Wang Yang, means “old wolf” in Chinese. He was  a computer engineer after graduation. And his destiny changed when he and Gao Xiaosong, now a well-known composer, collaborated to produce the above-mentioned songs. Since then, he has devoted himself entirely to a career in pop music.

3. I have you in my life (一生有你) – by Shui Mu Nian Hua

“I have you in my life” was released in 2001 by the band of Shui Mu Nian Hua. Both the band members, Lu Gengxu and Li Jian, are graduates of China’s top university, Tsing Hua. Despite their non-musical education, Shui Mu Nian Hua has managed to garner thousands of fans as well as numerous music awards with their harmonious duets, fluent melodies and sentimental memories of campus.

4. Flowers ( 那些花儿)- by Pu Shu

“Flowers” was recorded in the year of 1999 by singer Pu Shu. He was born in Nanjing and grew up in Beijing. In 1994, he quit studying at Capital Normal University and started composing songs. He became a signed singer in 1996. His signature works are “Flowers” and “Birch Forest.”
